hawaii become a state and served that state for more than a half a century in congress. good morning from washington. it's tuesday, december 18, 2012. president obama has told his administration to start looking for ways the country can respond to the tragedy in newtown. we'll be joined by vice president biden yesterday afternoon, the president talk with top members of his team including the vice president. arne duncan, attorney general larry holder and kathleen sa beale ya. this morning, children go back to school for the first time since last week's tragedy. newtown police as well as state troopers are expected to be on-site when schools open two hours later than unusual. sandy hook elementary, though, will remain closed. on monday, moving trucks arrived at the school to transport furniture to chalk hill school in the neighboring town of monroe, which will reopen to accommodate the sandy hook students. >> they're taking pictures of all the walls, everything where all the decorations were and they were be painstakingly put back together as close as possible to recreate that room. >> monr

daniel of hawaii. as long as the state of hawaii has been a state, it has been represented in congress by daniel, but it is his life before that, before his time in congress, which is a life that reads like fiction and that earned him legendary status. he was there at pearl harbor. after witnessing that attack on our country, he tried to serve the united states in the military, but not only was he told that he couldn't, he was labelled an enemy alien by the united states government. ultimately even after that dan inyoye. during a firefight he was shot in the stomach, but even after being shot, he led his platoon against a nest of machine gunners that were perched on a ridge in italy. during that attack, he had his right arm shattered by german gunfire. he still managed to destroy the german encampment by snatching a grenade from that destroyed arm and throwing the grenade toward the enemy position taking it out and earning himself in the process the medal of honor. dan inhoye became the second longest serving senator in u.s. history, and at the time of his death he was third in the lan

died yesterday. he has represented hawaii in congress ever since it became a state back in 1959. he spent almost 50 years in the senate serving as chairman of the powerful appropriations committee and the senate's president pro-tem making him third in line for succession to the presidency. president obama praised the world war ii veteran and medal of honor recipient calling inouye a true american hero. he lost his arm fighting the germans in 1945. harry reid remembered his colleague yesterday on the senate floor. >> i have never known anyone like dan inouye, no one else has. the kindness and -- that he has shown me during my time here in the senate has been something i will cherish always. a man who has lived and breathed the senate. if there were ever a patriot, dan inouye was that patriot. >> daniel inouye's staff said his final world was aloha. he is survived by his wife, son and granddaughter. he was 88 years old. >>> republican congressman tim scott will be switching chambers next year becoming the first african-american u.s. senator from the state of south carolina. governor n

senate. danielle inouye who represents hawaii in congress since becoming a state. he died yesterday. you might never know he was a true american hero. the 88-year-old was a medal of honor recipient who volunteered after pearl harbor even as his fellow japanese-americans were in internment camps. his unit most decorated in the war caught in a fire fight in italy and inouye shot in the stomach and wounded he continued to fight crawling up a hillside, grabbing a grenade of a wounded arm to kill the germans saving many lives. inouye lost that arm but while recovering from the wounds in the hospital he met two future senate greats. phillip hart and bob dole. they all ended up serving together. he became a key player in american political life for 50 years the vice president today swore in senator patrick leahy. third in line for the presidency. >> so help me god. >> congratulations. bittersweet moment. >> bittersweet indeed. he died with his wife and son at his side. his last word according to his office was, aloha. trusted everywhere. ♪ you make me happy [ female announcer ] choose the sam

medal of honor recipient as an american hero. you had insights. >> his family had been in hawaii since the late 1800s and pearl harbor happened and dan rushed down to the harbor to treat his fellow americans with the training he got in first-aid and then when we were sending japanese americans to internment camps he volunteered for the 42ed. when he was on the dock leaving for war, his father said to him, this country has been very good to your family. you may have to die for this country and it will be a great honor for your family. he ends up saving the national guard unit, losing his arm, getting medal of honor eventually, get back to america, in a hospital room recuperating with guess who? bob doyle and phil hart, his roommates, two of the most distinguished senators in american history. they became fast friends and decided they wanted to devote their life to public service and all went home and ran for the senate and got there, one republican and two democrats. his last word before he died, aloha. we have to pay homage to him. >> we'll be right back. ♪ i'd like to thank eating r
